CHAPTER 5

The next few days were absolute hell. Cecily refused to answer any of my calls or texts. I thought about checking in on Dane to see how he was handling the whole messy scene, but figured that probably wasn’t the best idea.

Thinking about both of them, I was restless and troubled. I was just as guilty as he was for what had happened. I could have stopped him. I could have stopped myself. I could have distanced myself from him in the very beginning once I knew that he was taken, but I hadn’t been able to resist. He was a shining opportunity at a life I had always wanted. While part of me absolutely hated myself for what I had done, the other half was just the slightest bit satisfied.

Everyone at work looked at me like I was the Devil. Evidently, word had got out already about what happened. Why was I not surprised? This was Miami, the gossip capital of the world. I dragged myself miserably through the days, trying to just keep my mind on the job, but it was hard. It was one thing to fuck up my life, but I felt like I had fucked up two other people’s lives, too. One who was supposed to be my best friend and the other, a guy who had probably just had too much to drink and was feeling vulnerable and not sure who he was anymore.

As I went through the boring routine of carrying trays and wiping tables at the Glitz Hotel, I just felt rotten. What could I do to make it up to Cecily? All I could think of was apologizing, but I doubted that would make much of a difference. Sure, she had been on the verge of dumping Dane for good from what she was saying that night, but that didn’t give me the right to take advantage of the situation. I just wanted to slink away from the world and never return.

I was on my way back to the kitchen with a tray full of dirty plates when my phone rang. Setting the tray down, I looked at it, but I didn’t recognize the number, so I let the call go to voicemail. When the lunch rush at the lounge was over, I finally had a chance to listen to the message.

It was from Dane. “Hey Kevin, I … I uh, I wanted to talk to you. Do you think we can talk later today? I know maybe you don’t want to have anything to do with me anymore, but I’d really appreciate five minutes of your time.”

I could have played the message over and over, listened to it all afternoon, savoring the sound of his deep, sexy voice, analyzing every word, every inflection. But that probably wasn’t the best way to move on with my life. So I hung up.

But still, hours later, his voice rang in my head and I found myself in the back of the kitchen playing it again.
